The choice of droplet size probability distribution function for oil spill modeling is not trivial

چکیده
The droplet size distribution (DSD) formed by gas-saturated oil jets is one of the most important characteristics flow to understand and model fate uncontrolled deep-sea spills. shape DSD, generally modeled as a theoretical lognormal, Rosin-Rammler or non-fundamental function, defines mass volume range droplets. Yet, fundamental DSD has received much less attention than median (d50) during ten years research following Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout. To better importance function we compare rising time, surface mass, sedimented beached masses for different DSDs derived from DWH literature in idealized applied conditions, while keeping d50 constant. We highlight substantial differences, showing that probability far-field modeling is, regardless d50, consequential spill response.

The measurement of droplet size distribution of water-oil emulsion through NMR method
The effects of water/oil volume ratio, type and concentration of demulsifier, water salinity and mixing speed on the average water droplets size in water-oil emulsion are evaluated at different times through NMR measurements. The type and concentration of demulsifier have the greatest effects on the average droplet size with 38% and 31.5%, respectively. The water/oil volume ratio, water salinity...
متن کاملUsing Weibull probability distribution to calibrate prevailing wind applying in oil spill simulation
In the Persian Gulf, the major source of oil pollution is related to the transportation of tankers, offshore production and discharges by coastal refineries. The water dynamical field has been obtained using a new hydrodynamic model. Local wind is recognized as the principal driving force combining to the water dynamic field to determine oil drift on the sea surface. The Weibull probability dis...

The U.S. National Research Council (NRC) Committee on Understanding Oil Spill Dispersants: Efficacy and Effects (2005) identified two factors that require further investigation in chemical oil dispersant efficacy studies: 1) quantification of mixing energy at sea as energy dissipation rate and 2) dispersed particle size distribution. To fully evaluate the significance of these factors, a wave t...
متن کاملStatistical modeling of sprays using the droplet distribution function
The theoretical foundations of a statistical spray modeling approach based on the droplet distribution function ~ddf!, which was originally proposed by Williams @Phys. Fluids 1, 541 ~1958!#, are established. The equation governing the ddf evolution is derived using an alternative approach. The unclosed terms in the ddf evolution equation are precisely defined, and the regime of applicability of...
متن کاملEvaluation of estimation methods for parameters of the probability functions in tree diameter distribution modeling
One of the most commonly used statistical models for characterizing the variations of tree diameter at breast height is Weibull distribution. The usual approach for estimating parameters of a statistical model is the maximum likelihood estimation (likelihood method). Usually, this works based on iterative algorithms such as Newton-Raphson. However, the efficiency of the likelihood method is not...
